SETLIST:Nelson Mandela

Although he was a son of South Africa, Nelson Mandela’s death is felt all across the globe, which also includes the world of music. The anti-apartheid revolutionary had a long, rich musical history—from singing folk songs, like “Shosholoza,” during his imprisonment on Robben Island (“The singing made the work lighter,” said Mandela in The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela) to concerts held in his honor while he was still in prison, like the 1988 Wembley Stadium show that celebrated his 70th birthday and helped get out the Free Mandela message. So we’ve compiled a playlist of songs honoring Nelson Mandela, including South African artists like Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Hugh Masekela and American musicians like Stevie Wonder and Public Enemy.
